If I am correct the firewall loads even if you start in safe mode, so it
    cannot be the firewall.
Since it works fine when in safe mode, there is something loading in the
background that hinders the remote desktop.
    Here are some questions:
Is your desktop login automaticly under an user account, with tools like
    TweakUI?
Does your PC has an nVidia card?
Was the WinXP installed from scratch or upgraded form previos Windows?
It the account you are trying to RD local Admin?
Also you can check forums for policies for RD.
I am running WinXP SP2 RC1 and RC2 on several PCs and I have no problems
with RD, I always use KISS.

meant that somehow the XP firewall that comes with RC2 was blocking Remote
Desktop. I made sure that Remote Desktop was clicked as an exception -
still couldn't get through. So turned the firewall off altogether - still
    couldn't get through.

Remote Desktop said - Fatal Error [Error Message: 5] - may be low on memory,
close some programs. I run a really lean start up (1 program; 22 processes)
    - but nevertheless shut down the program and the 5 non-Microsoft processes -
and still can't get Remote Desktop to go. Go back to safe mode with
networking and all is fine. So seems that there must be some Microsoft
process that is hampering the connection.
