VPN issues

I am trying to connect vpn between two xp pro machines. I finally got it
connected successfully, but could not reach any shares by ip or browsing. I
was getting a private server and clent ip uon connection. Suddenly I was not
able to even connect anymore. I got several errors about time out, agreeing
on a handshake, etc. I reset the host machine (work machine) but did not
make any other changes and still get stuck at verifying password. So
insterad of connecting and not being able to reach shares I can no longer
connect. When I reverse the host and client (connect from work to home
instead of home to work) I can connect but the server address is a
169.xxx.xxx.xxx number. I am out of ideas at this point. BTW, I am using a
MS MN-100 base station on both systems with newest firmware.
