Erratic behaviour in WMP 10

I'm getting some weird behaviour from WMP 10 (and IrfanView, which
uses the 'Microsoft Media Player interface').

For a start, some (not all!) of my WMV files give different results in
different programs. A typical example of a 2.6 MB WMV gives these
bizarre results:

- WMP10: Plays video but not audio
- IrfanView: Plays audio but not video
- NeroShowTime: Plays both video and audio
- PowerDVD: Plays both video and audio

It opens OK in GSpot and the DirectShow Render section shows this,
FWIW:
Render Video Src Type 4cc: WVP2
Audio Src WMAudioV2
Video Path (S) --> WMVideo Advanced Decoder DMO --> (R)
Audio Path (S) --> WMAudio Decoder DMO --> (R)
Status: Rendering Successful.

As part of my various attempts to fix it I tried re-installing WMP 10.
But, at the end of the process, I got message: "It was not possible to
complete Setup. Windows Media Player 10 was not installed. To update
Windows, run Windows Media Player 10 Setup again." But that gave same
result.

Also, WMP 10 will not play AVI files properly, yet IrfanView will!

Any help gratefully received please.
