The first clue in many cases is: "I've tried downloading all sorts of codec's/players"
Many codec's out there cause problems so when I am trying to troubleshoot video problems such as these ones the very first thing I ALWAYS suggest is to open WMM and disable all the codec's. Then close and reopen Movie Maker then try importing.

I'm having the same problem on my PC. With every single video file, the sound
works, but the screen is black. I've tried downloading all sorts of
codecs/players and checking my video card, but there seems to be no errors.
