Thank you for your reply. Let me provide some additional detail:
1. The drive is 3 years old but not heavily used. When used it was to
watch pre-recorded movies.
2. It started to act up right after I put the DVD that I recorded on
an ILO machine into the drive. I was trying to transfer a TV show to my
hard drive at the time and it failed to copy. In reading furhter ILO
has some security features on their disk. The ILO disk played teh show
fine I had problems when I tried to copy.
3. My computer no longer recognizes ANY DVD disk at all in the drive.
In explorer, in Power DVD or Windows Media Player it says "Insert a
Disk into Drive D" It seems the drive cannot read DVD's any more.
4. Device manager says the system is working ok - on issues at all.

Can you give me any advice? Is it possible to work with CD but not
DVD? Any way to test it? I really appreciate any advice you can give
me.
4. It reads CD ok but sometimes slow.
5. I cleaned the laser with a can of compressed air and an alcohol swab
- no difference.
6. I tried several older restore points and none helped at all. Same
result
7. When I put a DVD in the drive it seems to be trying to start up but
the spped sounds highly variable and it never really gains much speed.
8. I have deleted the drive in the system utility and let XP re-load
it . Same result.
9.

Hi,
You have nothing to lose by trying a firmware upgrade -
This link is to latest firmware for that specific drive:

Though I suspect your drive is knackered and needs replacing.
Let us know if the firmware upgrade cure's the prob.
