Always a good thing to throw stuff you're not sure about in here as an ask even after doing the research. You might potentially find out the reality of what someone has gone through in the past, as opposed to what a white paper will tell you about the theoretical ease of using a system.

We just use Altiris, takes most of the pain out of deployment, but it's not cheap at all.

tools (BDD) to help with deployment but we dont have that much in
the way of dollars. is there a way i can do this with some free or
inexpensive tools? thanks for your help

RIS/Desktop Deployment is free with Windows Server...

Are you UPGRADING or installing fresh?

Other options might include something like:
http://unattended.msfn.org/
(customize a CD/DVD to do everything for you...)

http://unattended.sourceforge.net/
(customize a net-bootable method...)

is RIS still around or is it called Desktop Deployment? is it free
with 2003 server/2000 server. any info on how i go about using it?
i dont want to use a CD. id rather be able to upgrade from share
folder/image. or the user get it from a shared folder

i am upgrading the desktops from 2000. ill check out the links you
sent me but was wondering if you have had success with these
methods in the links.

Going to be managing some sort of IT infrastructure? Using tools to install/manage software? Better learn this now... ;-)
