If you have tried both via download & image then that would tend to indicate
that you have a hardware problem
Check for hw driver updates at manufacturers sites, uninstall any anti virus
or malaware apps, disconnect any external hw.
0x0000007F is indicative of a hw err.

I tried to install XP servicepack 3 (final) to XP professional. I have had
sp2 and all updates installed. SP3 installation leads to blue screen of
death
with error 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80042000, ....) (if I remember right
the
rest was all zero) This happens when it is "performing cleanup" after
installing SP. I have tried to install from windows update, exe-file and
cd-image. Tried to install virusprotection on and off. All failed.
Sometimes
it is possible to run Windows after BSOD. It says sp3 installed in Control
panel add/remove programs. It says sp2 installed on System properties. Any
ideas what to do? Obviously there is something wrong with sp3.

go just fine from Windows update.
