That sounds like something that might work. I check into it. Thanks for the
information Peter.

The object here is to slipstream SP2 into your original XP Pro CD.
here is the website where you can download...not install...SP2
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en
and here is a website that will explain how to Slipstream that download into
your original and create a newer XP Pro SP2 CD
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
Once you have that created you can then use this CD to start a Repair
Installation which should correct your drivers.....and you should be able to
start the PC.
After which you will need to load the mobo drivers that came with the mobo.

I don't agree. The hardware is fine. I have installed a copy of Server
2003
by booting from its setup CD and the system is running fine with it
(different HDD) but I would rather have XP Pro back on the machine. The
SP2
setup includes newer hardware drivers for current day MBs than the
original
setup CD. The SP2 setup I booted from floppies got much further in the
process than the setup booted from the original CD. The original setup
give
a stop 0x7E on pci.sys after loading the drivers and attempting to start
windows.

Your problem is not related to SP2, having an original or SP1 CD and an
SP2
install will not prevent your PC from booting from the CD, you have other
problems, maybe with the disk or your CD drive. Check the BIOS boot order
to
make sure the CD drive is listed before the hard drive.

I have a computer on which I have been running XP Pro for many years.
The
system was upgraded from a previous windows using the original XP Pro
Upgrade
CD. The installed system was upgraded using Internet download patches
to
SP2
long ago. I have installed a newer mother board in the machine and the
installed windows will not boot because of lack of drivers for the new
MB.
When I attmept to re-install from the original CD, booting setup from
the
original CD also fails because it is pre-SP2 (or SP1) and will not
start
with
the newer chipset on the MB.
I downloaded the SP2 setup from MS and created boot floppies. That
version
will run setup to the point of needing the CD. It will not accept my
CD
because it is not a SP2 CD.
So, my question is since I have a valid license for XP Pro on this
machine,
is there any way I can get a SP2 setup CD that will install on the new
MB?
Or do I have to purchase a complete new copy of XP Pro and spend even
more
$
on this computer?
