Note:
A brand new computer that has just been built, be it built at home or
at some manufacturer will not have operating system on the drive...
... Windows will not be usable, thus no My Computer, Drive icons or
whatever simply because the operating system hasn't been installed as
yet... so as Andrew E states it is irrelevant at this stage...
all that is required is a working CD or DVD drive that can read the
disc so that the OS can be installed, note at this stage this new
machine will not be able to boot from any external or USB drives -
simply because no OS means no drivers etc.
The first thing to do is to go into bios and set the CD ROM as the 1st
boot device insert the CD and reboot and if the actual CD drive unit is
ok then it will start to install the operating system.
If you do not set the CD as the 1st boot device then it will boot from
the hard drive every time.. unless of course it's a brand new hard drive
and follow the link XP Clean Install as given by DL.
Do not get confused with a repair install, it's always better to do a
complete install, before you start ensure you have the mobo chipset
drivers etc.
