Thanks Will.
At least it makes the reasoning a bit clearer.

It seems that I have "changed computer hardwae significantly" enough
that
WinXP thinks it is a new computer. After frying a motherboard earlier
in
the
year, I had to get a cheapo board as a stop-gap measure, and now that I
got
my new motherboard, windows wants me to register again. The problem
is,
I
have registered with my product ID number too many times, apparently,
and
now
I have 3 days, and I can't get through on their tech support line, as
it
continually disconnects.
Any ideas?
