Re: installing os to 2nd hard drive

what is PATA?? yes they are both not sata.. the new one is a ultra ata/100
7200 rpm. the old one is 5400 rpm. will that make a difference?

i have been making only i partition on the new drive.

Since you mentioned the word "master" in connection with one of
your HDs, I'm assuming that both HDs are PATA (i.e. not SATA)
HDs. Is that the case?

Please supply the following information:
1) On the clone HD, how many partitions are there (use Disk Management
to see this).
2) Which partition no. is the OS on?
3) Which partition no. are the boot files (i.e. boot.ini, ntldr, ntdetect.com) on?
4) Is the partition containing the boot files marked "active" (use Disk Mgt
again to see this - if there's just one partition, and "Mark Partition as Active"
is grayed out when you rt-clk the partition's GUI, it's "active")
5) Please list the contents of the boot.ini file which is just below the root of
the partition containing the boot files.

just got done trying that. didnt work..

got the first blue screen, then to black and up came the words:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk.
Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the windows
documentaion about hardware disk configuration and your
hardware reference manuals for additional information."

whats next to try??

In the absence of such a CD, you can download a free 30-day
trial copy of Casper XP from www.FSSdev.com/products/casperxp/ .
The only restriction imposed on the free trial version is that the
clone OS will be in a partition of the same size as the original OS's
partition.

BTW, standard cloning technique for WinXP/NT/2K is to have the
"parent" OS invisible to the clone when the clone boots up for the
first time. The easiest way to do this (if the clone resides on
another HD) is to simply disconnect the data cable from the original
HD when booting the clone for the first time. The clone will
automatically move to the head of the default HD boot order when
the original HD is removed, so no re-jumpering is necessary to boot
the clone. After booting in isolation for the first time, the clone on
subsequent boots may be allowed to see its "parent" OS without
any problems.

Hard drive manufacturers provide programs to do what you want.
These should be on the CD you got with the new drive or can be
downloaded from the manufacturer's web site.

I have a HP Pavilion comp. original drive is partition for c drive
and d drive. D drive is for the HP recovery program. the
computer was already loaded with Windows XP Home ed.
so I dont have a cd. I have installed a second hard drive G into
my computer and formated for files. on tuesday or wed my after
having updates to windows done, computer was restarted and
I started getting a smart error dectecting that my C drive is
about to have iminent failure.
What I would like to do is this, Install the os onto the 2nd hard drive,
transfer everything from 1st hd to 2 hd. then make 2nd hard drive
as master and original as 2nd drive for saving until I get a new
one to replace it. ok, is this possible to do without losing
information back up files, etc?
can you point me the steps to do or a website to print the steps?
any cautions etc?
