Ron
Thanks for responding.
The problem I am having is that whenever I try to copy from this PC's drive
to a CD, the inbuilt XP copy program (based on the Roxio application) gets to
the point where it does the actual copy, tries to delete a temporary file and
then crashes explorer, leaving the CD only partially copied to and
(presumably) the original temporary file still there on the disk.
I am getting over the problem by using my notebook (which has XP Pro also,
but this time an HP OEM version) which is able to copy to its DVD drive
without any of this hassle.
When I complete the "backup" of the C: drive, I will then blow this C: drive
out by a new install of XP and hope that this sorts out the "bugs" that are
preventing it working properly at present.
I am increasingly of the belief that my problems are caused by the fact that
I chose to upgrade from Win2k rather than install anew.

I have upgraded a Win2k Pro installation on my home PC last week to WinXP Pro
SP2.
In the last couple of days, I have identified an enormous quantity of errors
that are occurring on the new XP environment. So much so that I now wish I
had NEVER upgraded. If it were not for the fact that my laptop has a
rock-solid XP Pro build on it, I would have rebuilt my Win2k already and wait
for SP2 of Vista before upgrading.
This morning, I have been trying to backup my important data to CD on the
desktop and have apparently failed totally to get XP to copy to the target
CD. As soon as the copy wizard finishes copying it crashes, apparently as it
is trying to delete some file. This crash removes Windows Explorer forcing a
re-load of explorer.
Can anyone here provide any pointers as to what I need to do to repair
windows to allow me to copy my data to CD before I attempt a complete
reinstall of Windows?

It is difficult to assist you with these errors unless you can provide
some more specific details about them.
For your CD related issues see the article by the late Alex Nichol MVP

Good luck
