If this sys came installed with w98, perhaps the hw doesnt support winxp

I have 2 hard disks and have 98 installed on one. I get xp installed onthe
other and it shuts down installation and gives me an error message. Ihave a
promise controller. Is this my problem? How do I get xp to completewhich
installation. The dual boot ini file is there because it asks @ set up
os to use??????
