Re: Installation process quits

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Thanks for your response.

I checked the compatibility and the following are the hardware related
issues reported:

1)IBM ThinkPad UltraBay:
ThikPad Ultraby Hot/Warm Swap Driver
2)Printer
Ring Zero Fax

I do not think the above should not affect installation(UltraBay is not
used).

Let me state what have been tried:

The PC is IBM ThinkPad 600E with 288MB RAM and 40GB HD.

1)Attempt to install WXP by booting from CDROM:
Result: The system shut itself down before the install process got to
the first reboot. Forced reboot generated display of "ntldr is missing"

2)The partition formatted in FAT32 and "sys" of DOS was transferred to
the drive, then installation was attempted:
Result: Same as above except that display of C:> prompt instead of
"ntldr is missing'.

3)Attempt to install WXP by executing winnt.exe in I386 which was copied
to the HD:
Result: Same as above

4)Attempt to upgrade install WXP from installed W98:
Result: While doing "Preparing Installation", "Setup cannot copy the
file: xxxxx" occurred frequently, I moved the process ahead by selecting
"Ignore" but at certain point the system shut itself down. When I
restarted the PC, installation process resumed but the same thing repeated.

5)The HD was temporarily moved to IBM ThinkPad X20 and WXP was installed
on to the HD, then the HD was moved back to ThinkPad 600E:
Result: WXP worked fine with ThinkPad 600E.

I would like to know how to install WXP directly to the ThinkPad 600E.
Any further suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks for your response.
I should have mentioned this but I am aware of the KB article and have
already tried that. If the proposed remedy in the KB is applied then C:
prompt is displayed and no resumption of installation process occurs.

The KB article does not appear applicable because 1) what I am trying to
do is not upgrade installation and 2) the installation process does not
get to the first automatic reboot stage. The problem is that the
process just ceases to progress before the first automatic reboot and
the system shuts itself down.

Any further suggestion would be appreciated.

My pc boots from WXP Pro CDROM, then after completing the text phase
when the yellow bar graph is at 51% the screen turns black and the PC
is
shut itself down. I restart the PC but it does not resume installation
and ntldr is missing is displayed. Note that 1)the recovery CDROM
which
came with this PC could restore W98 and 2)I could clean install W2K.
I wonder why I can not instll WXP Pro. Please help.
