I feel your pain - I lost 3 years of data the same way when my backup drive failed during a reinstall on my primary drive!
I use SyncBackSE for my routine backup chores (there's a freeware version
available), and to back up my entire system I rely heavily on Acronis True
Image (about $50 US) to image my entire hard drive(s) on a regular basis.
Then it's 20 minutes and I'm back up and running! :)

Re: Keeping records ... FTM is set to automatically back up on exit to a separate hard disk... I'll occasionally drop a backup DVD off at my parent's ...house, just in case...that way if both the house and my office burn ... that corruption could be introduced into the backups. ...
