I don't know anything about BootMagic, and I don't think the
native Windows boot manager deserves its name. When I want
a good boot manager then I use XOSL. It gives me complete
flexibility about where my OSs reside, it lets me select which
partitions to hide and which ones to unhide, and it's free. It will
easily resolve your Question 1. As to your Question 2 - I would
not bother, since XOSL is so much superior.
If you're interested in going down the XOSL path then I can
provide you with a step-by-step instruction for installing and
configuring it. It's non-destructive - hence you do not need to
reload any of your existing OSs. It's also non-intrusive: It can
be removed at any time, without damage to the boot environment
of your OSs. There is, of course, a learning process involved.
If you wish to go ahead then you need to post an accurate map
of your disk, e.g. like so:
Partition 1 10 GBytes primary NTFS (for WinXP)
Partition 2 5 GBytes primary FAT32 (for Win98)
Partition 3 5 GBytes logical FAT32 (for shared data)
Partition 4 10 GBytes logical NTFS (for WinXP data)

I am installing XP in a new primary partition on the HD of my
Dell Inspiron 5000 notebook, with the original Win98SE system to remain
as an alternative boot in the next partition. I used Partition Magic to
the move the existing partitions (C:, D:, E:, F:) to free up about 4GB for
the new partition at the beginning of the HD.
When I did this on my desktop it was without much difficulty; the new
partition became an "alternative C:", so BootMagic can switch one to hidden
whin the other
is set to active. Works great.
However, on the notebook there has been nothing but grief. For some reason
the XP setup keeps the Win98SC partition unhidden, and makes the new
partition H:. Thus when I try to use either BootMagic or PQBoot everything
goes to
h*ll in a handbasket --- netiher partition will boot. If Win98SE is
selected, it
fails saying NTLD is missing, and if XP is selected I get the initial splash
screen then
a message "autoskp (or something like that) not found" and it attempts to
reboot,
failing of course. The first few times it happened I couldn't figure out how
to recover other than
reinstalling XP. Then I discovered that by using the PM rescue floppies I
could set the
XP partition active and UNHIDE the Win98SC partition I can get XP to boot
again. But I really don't like that situation, because all that stuff in the
Win98SC partition is exposed when using XP although much of it is
appropriate only under
Win98SE.
The only difference I can think of between the desktop and notebook
installations is that I was forced to install at the commandline from
floppies on the
notebook, as opposed to installing from the XP CD on the desktop. The
installers are
obviously two different programs at the user interface (very NT-like), and
possibly at a deeper level.
So, with that background the questions are:
1. Is there any way I can get the command line installer to hide the Win98SE
C drive and make the new XP drive C?
2. How do I set up boot.ini so the MS multiboot loader will work? I know
it's just a matter of adding a line to boot.ini of the form:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
What I don't know is what the integers in parentheses are. I can guess, but
I'd rather know precisely. I think I can get the need info from the PM
reports.
TIA
Ed
