clean install winxp

My hard drive is going bad so I'm trying to replace my 80gb drive with a
160gb drive formatted as 80x2. I backed the old up, but I'm hoping to
temporarily install it as a slave and copy the settings & documents folders
when I get xp up and running.

I've never done a new install of xp.

I formatted (NTFS) the new drive and put it in alone (so that there is no
install on the hd) using the WD Lifeguard utility. When I boot with my
original xp disk (prior to sp1 but I was running sp2 on my problematic hard
drive) it says: NTLDR Missing.

Could this be an incompatibility with xp sp0?
Can I try it with the xp sp1 disk that I already have from another computer?
(I did save my registration file from my older computer).
OR ????

Does the note about creating a booT disk apply to this? It seems to
reference a drive and directory on the harddrve but mine would be blank.
Does the fact that I have two partitions on this drive change the command on
the file?

NOTE: I can still run from my old hard drive although after I while, I start
getting $MFT corrupt errors and things stop working. SO if there's a way
to make this simpler by installing both drives and installing from one to the
other, I could try that.

The one thing I'm trying now is to install the new drive as slave and use my
sick win xp disk to startup then partition and format the new disk. My
plan was to then boot from the xp sp0 cd (again) and see if I could install
onto the first partition of the new drive. If that doesn't work, I'll try
to boot to my other computer's xp sp1 disk.

It will be formatting for a while.. so will need to wait until tomorrow to
try this. If you have suggestions in the meantime! :-).

Ps. I do have the xp sp2 UPGRADE disk, but I'm assuming I can't do a clean
install from that, right?
.
