Re: Install XP from file

I have a similar situation. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron, about 4 years old
and now running Win98SE. I'm trying to install XP Pro SP2 in a separate
partition for a dual boot configuration. I recently did this on my desktop
machine and was able to boot off of the XP installation CD. So far that
has not worked for the Dell laptop. Yes, I did configure BIOS setup
so the "CDROM" drive (actually, a DVD drive) is first in the boot sequence.
Instead of pausing and asking "Boot from the CD?" it just goes on and boots
into Win98 from the hard disk.

I also tried booting from a Win98 boot disk and choosing "With CD support,"
planning to run the WINNT.EXE from the XP installation CD. That failed
because the Win98 boot disk could not find a driver for the "CDROM."
I expect all this grief is due to the Dell having a DVD instead of a CDROM.

In a file SETUPXP.HTM on I found out that the XP setup program and files can
be put of a set of 6 floppies when a CDROM is not available. You have to
download an EXE file from a MS site, then run it to create the floppies.
I did that yesterday, but have not tried them yet. I may first try copying
the
i386 directory to a directory on the Hard disk and doing a commandline
install
from Win98.

To download the EXE, go to:

NOTE: There is a separate download for XP SP2.
