Clean Install Error

I'm trying to fix my cousin's laptop & when ever I try to install XP it comes
up with a d:/setup error #536674392. It's a toshiba sattleite from 2002 & I
refprmatted the drive by a cdrom,so the cd/dvd is ok. The hard drive
formatted fine. Unfortunately,he bought it supposedly new on the net & it
never came with recovery disks, but I have the same version of xp & his cd key
that was on the laptop itself. This error pops up right after it inspects the
system & starts the next step. He was told by a pc shop(one that left half
the screws out) that the cpu was fried, but I plugged it in & that part seems
fine.Goes through bios,acts like a normal setup,& before I started it had
some weird driver error,so windows failed to boot & the repair option
wouldn't work. I build desktops,but I'm new to laptops. I'm thinking it's a
board or cmos problem. You can email me @heavymetal777@xxxxxxxx Need to fix
this asap. Thanks
.
