Failure during Upgrading from win98 to XP home

I ran the 'check compatibility' from the XP home disk on my computer before
upgrading. Comes back saying: no incompatibilities. When I start the
upgrade process, the computer completely hangs after one of the reboots
during the 'Preparing installation' process. I tried 'new installation'
instead of upgrading. I tried reloading my 98 OS with very minimal settings
then upgrading. Absolutely no luck. Anyone experiencing this? Thanks for
any input.
