That depends on what kind of "system errors" it is finding. If it's orphaned
or bogus registry entries that's one thing; use a registry cleaner if it's
lost clusters or cross linked files, that's another; just run chkdsk /f (or
maybe in XP they call it scandisk again). A "repair install" might not be a
bad idea if there are file revision problems. Do the repair install, then go
to windows update.

As for the security and policy settings, if it were XP Pro would you know
how to do it? If so, I'd suggest investing in an upgrade. It would pay for
itself if it saved a couple of trips to the shop. XP Home is not very
flexible when it comes to security tuning.
