network card not functioning correctly

I am running RIS from a server 2003 sp2 box.

I am trying to installed winxpsp2 onto a compaq dx2000mt

The nic drivers i have copied into the i386 folder and stopped and started
binlsvc.

The os installed ok except it doesnt join the domain which I have told it to
do.

When I check device manager it says the network drivers are not installed,
yet I have just stuffef a whole OS on there using the very same NIC drivers.

Please can someone tell me what is going on?
