Well, if you erase a partition, then you'll loose all data from it. Then,
you'll have to re-create that partition and install the operating system on
it. Do this only if you have all your data backed up. This will give you a
clean, fresh installation, with no rubbish left around.

If you don't want to erase the old partition, you should just select the
original one you had Windows XP (it's usually C:, unless you had it
differently), it will then perform an in-place install (basically overwrite
the old system and reset all the settings)

If your system boots up into windows, you can just insert the install CD
after you are in Windows and run the setup from it. This will re-install
Windows and keep your old installed programs.
