Hello NG,

I had to exchange my hard disk due to a head crash. I replaced a 80GB
Seagate by a 160GB Western Digital (See below).

I have had trouble with this new drive from the beginning. First I had
to flash the BIOS because it only recognized 136GB. After having
flashed the BIOS, I began installing Windows XP Home Edition (IIRC
RTM, i.e. no service pack). The setup also recognized only 136GB
despite of what the BIOS says.

I have learned that Windows XP has LBA48 deactivated, so I thought -
OK, no problem, I will fix it later. But on my first start, the system
crashed UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, you know that problem. So I ran
chkdsk /R and got it to install the rest of the system. At this point
I have not yet had the change to activate it (That's after the second
restart). I never got that far.

I am able to start the system in failsafe mode, but only without
network drivers. If I start network drivers, the boot fails with 0xED
i.e. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. So I installed SP2 in the hope this will
solve my problems, but no chance. Still UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME, even
with SP2 (But it now correctly recognizes 160GB in the failsafe mode).
So what can I do? - I am very desperate, and I do not want to replace
the hard drive yet again, because it works.

Kind regards,
Franz

P.S.: Further system details MEDION PC-MT5:
Intel Pentium IV 1,8 GHz
Unkown Main Board, labeled Medion, I think its a MSI product
512 MB RAM
Western Digital WD1600JB-00GVA0 Hard Drive
DVD and CD/RW Drive
Realtek 8139 network control
