WindowsXP new install - spyware / adware attacks before I can run windows update!

Hi,
I am trying to install WindowsXP Home (pre-service pack edition) on a
new computer. After the install, and as soon as I connect to the
internet, the computer gets attacked by all sorts of spyware/adware
before I can even download and install the many windows updates
(including SP2). As a result, the system processes utilize 100% of the
CPU and the system slows to a crawl / standstill.

Does anybody have any idea how I can get and install the necessary
windows updates before this barrage of spyware infects my computer? It
seems most spyware programs require me to be online to update before
they install, and by then it's too late.
