I work at a college and manage all the computer labs. Each lab has different
software and different printers. Students come and go in every lab every
quarter. We generally remove profiles on a regular basis to keep the
machines clean. We do not use roaming profiles because of the obvious issues
with printers, settings and software in each lab. I decided the best way was
to create (with a generic student account with student privileges) a profile
for each lab on a PC in each of those labs. I log in as a student, set all
the settings and install the printers for that lab. I reboot and copy the
profile to Default User folder as well as a stored folder on our network. To
test I delete the generic student account and re-login to see if the printers
appear and all the settings. We recently moved into a new building and these
new images are built with Windows XP Service Pack 2.
This profile practice has worked beautifully until this quarter. I should
say (not sure if it has anything to do with it) that these PC's have been
assigned (for the first time) an internal IP that shows up as another IP
externally. So the problem is that once a student logs in (even if I use my
generic student account) and they try to print they get an Explorer.exe error
and basically have lost all connection to that printer and cannot print. One
resolution has been for them to delete the printer and reinstall. Sometime
this works, but it's not a great solution for so many classes and so many
students. I want the printers to be setup and ready to go and working when a
student sits down to print...period. Sometimes reinstalling the printer is
not enough and I have to reboot the PC, disconnect the network cable from the
PC and reinstall the printer.
Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? Any help would be appreciated.
