Background: Windows XP-Pro sp2 system with failing system disk. I was able
to do a complete backup of the disk (both windows backup and Veritas/Stomp
backup mypc). Replaced the disk, reinstalled XP-sp1 from my msdn cd and then
restored the disk & system state with ms backup. This didn't work at all.
The system blue screened and the rebooted. An attempt to repair also failed.
I reinstalled again and this time used stomp backup to restore. This still
got fatal error at restart, however, doing a repair did work well enough to
get the system running. During install, I got a bunch of errors, "Cant copy
file" saying it could not read the source. I then reinstalled SP2 hoping
that would correct the missing files. sp2 seemed to install ok.
The system ran albeit with a number of problems among which was IIS no long
worked. I used add/remove windows components to uninstall and then attempted
to reinstall after reboot. I get the same 'cant copy file' errors. I copied
the cd install folders to a HD and tried again pointing to the hd folder for
the files when the error occured. The can't copy file error still occurs.
I tried to manually copy several of the files ID'ed in the error boxes and
had no problem copying from either the cd or the hd folder so the files seem
to be ok. The system disk is FAT32 so permissions shouldn't be an issue.
I've looked through the logs & event viewer and am at a loss what this is
about.
Any suggestions as to what I can look at to try and get a handle on this?
Thanks,
Dale
