Bit late though, but still wanty to share my experience.
Found the first recommendation not much help as it assumes you may still get
your system up one way or the other.
Looking around, I stumbled on 875350 - How to remove Windows XP Service Pack
2 from your computer. Using the Recovery Console, I could disable SP2 and
boot. Then I could uninstall SP2.
Still looking for a clue what caused the problem, and hesistant to retry SP2.
