After installing XP PRO SP2, the boot process stopped
responding. After rebooting into safe mode, this message
was in the Application event log.

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you
on with the default profile for the system.

 DETAIL - Incorrect function. "

And these messages were in the system log.

"The DHCP Client service depends on the NetBios over Tcpip
service which failed to start because of the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning. "

"The DNS Client service depends on the TCP/IP Protocol
Driver service which failed to start because of the
following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning. "

"The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service depends on the AFD
Networking Support Environment service which failed to
start because of the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning."

.....with a lot of others. When we checked the device
manager for the machine we found that there was three
network card drivers installed for the machine. It's a test
machine and we've changed several network adapters in the
past on it. SP2 seemed to have found all the previous cards
and installed them.

When we tried to delete the superfluous cards, the message
was that the card was needed in the boot process. How can
we change this? We've got a number of machines where the
card's been upgraded (Realtek 8190 to Acer ALN330) and
don't want to have this problem with those.

System restore worked fine except with a large number of
renamed /system32 dll's. Problem was repeated when we tried
again after checking the network card and drivers.

Any suggestions?
