Yes, I have tested this myself with success as well, so it look like
the documentation was correct and not Darren's statement.

I found that you actually don't need to compress the netfw.in_ again,
I just gave the extracted file the full name netfw.inf, modified it
and copied it to the the \IC AND \IP directories (placed in
parallel with the original compressed file "netfw.in_"). The
netfw.inf took presence over the netfw.in_ file.

For others that have not used an expanded service pack file before,
use the command line switch /x on the 266 MB large SP2 installation
file to start the extraction. Then you can start on step 1. above.

For step 7. (Install SP2), you will need to run the file
...\i386\update\update.exe to start the installation.

Update.exe supports the same command line switches as the large SP2
install file does (for unattended setup, suppress backup files etc).
