installing XP

This is pretty lengthy, so bear with me. I'm trying a
clean install of XP. I went into BIOS but don't think I
can boot from CD. Options were set at follows: Multibay-
first, Hard Drive-second, Ethernet-third. I left it as
is. I ran setup from the CD, selected the drive to
partition and install XP on, chose to convert drive to
NTFS, chose option to have all existing folders/files,
etc to be deleted. Went through entire 40min process.
Was not asked for product key, but was asked to register
online. IS THIS NORMAL? Anyway, after I selected to
register software at a later date, I began to install
Wireless G card to reconnect to home network and
internet. I just happen to look in the "My Computer"
folder and VIOLA! all my old existing files and folders
were still under Local C drive. ANY IDEA WHAT HAPPENED
AND WHY? I guess I will have to redo the entire process,
but I dread this happening again. Any suggestions? By
the way, my laptop doesn't have a floppy so after reading
previous suggestions, I can't create boot disks -- unless
I use my removable pin drive. ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE
GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE :) 1:59EST
