I've been running XP for quite a while with 2 video cards
installed (both with nVidia chips), one AGP and one PCI.
These worked perfectly with XP, and continued to work
when I upgraded to SP1.
However, when I upgraded to SP2, during Windows startup,
during the Star Trek screen (with the blocks scrolling
across a box on the lower part of the screen -- looks
like the old Star Trek video screen), the screen flashed
once (it never did that with SP1), and after coming back
for about 2 seconds, a BSoD flashed up for about 1/10
second, and then the system would re-boot!
I ran through this re-boot a number of times trying to
read the BSoD screen, and I finally made
out "IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" up near the top. I also
noticed that when the screen 'flashed', it appeared that
the second video screen was being initialized (I saw a
flicker on the second monitor), so I guessed that there
was a problem with having 2 video cards (or at least my 2
video cards), so I removed the PCI card (an ELSA card
with nVidia chips).
Without the PCI card, the system booted just fine. But,
I no longer have 2 screens! I really liked having most
of my screen icons on the second screen, and while
developing, I could keep source code on 1 screen, and the
program output on the second.
Has SP2 changed the list of 'acceptable' second video
cards, or does it have a problem in general with multiple
cards?
Steve
