Your files are probably safe but your WinXP installation
might be cooked. To get at your files, you have various
options.
- Small files can be copied to a floppy disk, by booting
with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com, then
perhaps running ntfsdos.exe from www.sysinternals.com
to access your NTFS partition.
- Large files must be copied to a hard disk. Buy, borrow or
steal a 2 GByte hard disk, install it as a slave disk, then
use the above method to copy your files.
- The easiest way is to install your disk as a slave disk
in some other Win2000/XP PC, then copy your files
to that machine's system disk.
You should consider this event as a timely reminder that
all important files must be backed up to an indeplendent
medium once every week. This time you're unlikely to
lose anything. Next time you might lose the lot.
