I thought I should be able to install XP "clean", then verify the qualifying OS for the upgrade. I get a NTLDR is missing message, but the articles on the MS site didn't seem to provide a solution I could use. I used the installation program provided by Western Digital to install the new drive prior to attempting to install XP pro.
Are you booting the computer from the Windows XP CDROM? Make sure
your computer's BIOS is configured so that the 3.5 diskette drive is
the first boot device, the CDROM drive is the second boot device and
the hard drive is the third boot device.
If you get the NTLDR is missing message when you attempt to boot from
the Windows XP CDROM disk then the disk is probably dirty or it may be
damaged. Try cleaning it with warm water and a soft, lint free, cloth
and see if that improves things.
Good luck
