second thought, you might have (inadvertently) choosen to set this machine
up as a domain client, in which case it is now trying to validate your
account credentials against a (non-existant) domain, which does not work,
which rejects your logon.
In that case during Safe Mode remove the domain membership and put the
machine back into a WORKGROUP.

specified two user accounts. I was not prompted for any password
information. On the next automatic reboot, it brought me to the login
screen, where both usernames were listed. Both now require passwords for
logging on, though none has ever been specified. Result -- can't log on.
After the "did you forget your password" bubble, I get an error message to
the effect that the username / domain cannot be found. I also did nothing
to specify anything about a domain.

it automatically accepted the previous settings -- meaning I never got to
specify anything about user accounts. I can get to a command prompt through
the recovery console as an administrator with a null password, but don't
know what to do from there.
