Win XP Home ,missing ntoskrnl.exe

Hi, my friend pc XP Home shows miss "missing ntoskrnl.exe". He then tried repairing XP home twice and it still doesnt work. He then tried upgrading to XP home again, still didnt work. Now he cant even go Safe mode F8 options.

He also tried Recovery console and try copying ntoskrnl file from CD rom, but still didnt work.
 Please help, he cant lose the data in C drive.
