ok new question in regards to this same problem in the
hope of fixing my dilemma. As i know the admin password
and the username used can i do a complete system reinstall
and it wont overwrite the desktop where my files are
stored. Or will the desktop be re-written.
Alternatively can i boot of my IDE which uses the same
username and admin password and access the files. I tried
to do this but i got an NTLDR missing when trying to boot
with the SATA still connected. Boots fine on the old IDE
without the SATA. So if i can access the files this way it
may be easier to try to copy my stuff back that way

to leave two IDE drives for storage and multiple boots.
Anyway i installed the SATA and XP home on it now worries.
I then set about loading all the updates (great fun on a
dialup) anyway as i was going through these everything
seemed to be going well so during the restarts copied over
a number of files from my old desktop and OS such as
outlook files, photos, music and other personal stuff with
no worries and everything going fine. After one of the
updates suddenly everything started going wrong. Not sure
which one it was. May also have been caused by the loading
of Adobe reader which was loaded at the same time. Also a
virus checker was loaded and found a nimda virus in the
restore files so turned them off to get rid of that.

front screen for XP it just stalls at the scrolling line
which shows under the XP home screen. Could not do
anything to get it started. Even safe mode wouldnt run
Stall ats MUP or some driver. So tried doing a
repairinstallation with the XP disk and now it wont
recognize my password so cant access it to restore it.

back to the old IDE drives so i can reformat the SATA
drive to start again. I can see the files using a couple
of linux and dos boot discs but cant find anything to copy
them off with to the IDEs. Does anyone know what i can
use. I really dont want to lose this stuff. Especially my
photos from over the years
