Cleanup with options after XP install?

I managed to do an XP install over my existing but
problematic Me partition. So far XP is extremely solid and
working well. I started with 1.6GB of free disk space (in
this partition) and ended up with 200MB free after the
install. I assume most of this space is used by backup
files in case XP was removed. I would like to remove
everything I can to free up disk space but I have a few
questions:

1> Is it possible to simply move most of these backup
files to another drive or CDs 'just in case' I may need
them someday?

2> Is it possible to locate and explore these backup files
for any bits and pieces of info I may be missing (e.g. I
had a problem with OE in Me and lost messages and address
books--I'm still looking for them)?

3> Are there any good cleanup utilities that will really
streamline a system safely and eliminate all the
accumulated clutter?

Thanks,
Lee
