Now I find I REALLY do need to set up FAX. Pretend I'm the STUPIDEST
person you've ever heard from, and give me a link to SIMPLE
instructions, examples, or advice here!
I have 'enabled' it in windows 'add programs'. Have printer/scanner
that plays nice w/sp (an old lexmark 5150 - no OCR)
Does XP FAX componet work? Is it worth the hassle to set it up?
Please give me your honest opinion!
And what about Skype (which I do have installed)
PS In past, have had phone hooked up to computer, but not since I've
had xp (just didn't need it).
Thank u so much...
XP Fax Services works ... sort of. But only with certain fax modems and only connected to an analog telephone line (e.g., not Skype).

With respect to hardware, see #12. These days, the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List is a bit hard to find. It's here: http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=x
FWIW, I have a Zoom v.92 PCI Fax Modem (Conexant chip) with XP Pro sp2, and Fax Services works ... almost all of the time. And it was virtually no hassle to set up.
