Lem,
I checked Norton on both computers and on the computer with the printer
attached it appeared that Norton had been automatically configured to trust
the network. On the other computer I had to manually trust the network. After
I did that when I used the add printer wizard it found the network but not
the printer. I had to manually put in the printer address and then it worked
just fine.

One computer has XP Home and the other (the one with the printer) has XP Pro.
I have Norton Internet Security 2008 for a firewall and antivirus.
I have not tried file sharing but will check it out and respond.

including Norton Antivirus? If you are not absolutely positive that you
have no other firewalls, open Task Manager and review all of the running
processes (not "applications") to make sure.
Can you share any files between the 2 computers? Do you have XP Home or
Pro or MCE (on each computer)?

When you ran the Network Setup Wizard, it turned on Windows Firewall and
configured it to allow file and printer sharing. Unfortunately, Norton
Firewall has not been configured. You should disable either the Norton
firewall or the Windows firewall. See http://tinyurl.com/2o26l2
If you elect to keep Norton Firewall, you need to configure it to allow
your Local Area Network traffic as trusted. The usual way to do this is
to allow a range of IP addresses. For example, 192.168.1.1 through
192.168.1.254. Your settings will vary depending on how you have
configured the DHCP server in the router (the foregoing numbers are
