Re: Cannot enable fax service after reinstallation of XP Home Edit

Thanks, Hal. I have seen your comments in response to other posts, and I
have looked at the KB article you reference. It is unclear from that article
if one is supposed to use the hotfix if one does not get the error messages
stated in the article. I do not get any of those error messages. My fax
program simply does not install, without any error messages whatsoever.
Should I use the hotfix under these circumstances?
Thanks again for your time, effort and help.

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?
In this case, it appears to have found everything, but didn't install
correctly. Its likely you have security data base corruption as documented
here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP
You can either:
1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.
2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software
I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number
of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the
utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.

I'd be grateful for any available help. I have a Dell Dimension 4800desktop,
Pentium 4. Recently I had to reinstall Windows XP (home edition). Iperformed
an "update" reinstallation to repair slow performance and servicesfax
malfunctions, not a clean install. I have not been able to reinstall the
service or the windows shared FAX driver. I have tried to uninstall andof
reinstall the Fax Service from the Add/Remove Windows Components a number
times, but I have not been successful. Although unclear, it appears thefax
service installation process is interrupted and then terminates withoutany
prompting from me, but it is not clear how or why this happens.my
Otherwise, the reinstallation of XP appears to have been successful, and
system otherwise appears to be operating properly. The fax service workedEdition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe
properly prior to the reinstallation.
