How do I connect my printer, attached to my desktop computer, to my laptop with wireless connection? I have a wireless router in order to access the internet via my laptop. You need to share the printer. Here's a "how to" for Win XP Home: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814005
(assumes you don't have a third-party software firewall; if you do, you'll have to configure it to permit file & printer sharing)
(you might want to read all 8 parts of the series)
Your desktop must be powered on in order for the printer to be accessible. This is one reason why some folks prefer to use a separate hardware print server or a "network ready" printer, but both of those are extra cost options. For what it's worth, the hp 6980 is a reasonably decent color inkjet printer with built-in wireless G network
connectivity for not a whole lot of money: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?product_code=C8969A%23B1H&tab=detailed_specs&storeName=storefronts&landing=&category=inkjets&subcat1=&catLevel=3&a1=Color+printing&v1=Color&a2=Networking&v2=Standard#defaultAnchor

If you use this printer, or one like it, all you have to leave powered on is the printer, not the desktop.
