Because the Lexmark 4300 doesn't have a fax capability, I assume that what you want to do is to scan a doc using the 4300 and then fax it using a fax modem. If -- and it's a big if -- your fax modem is on the XP "approved" list (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) it may (no guarantees) work with WinXP fax services.

If you don't have a WinXP CD, you still may be able to install WinXP Fax from Add/Remove Windows Components if there is an i386 directory on your hard drive. See http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132

If not, you can either use a fax service as you mentioned (eFax is the one I've seen mentioned most, but I don't use it, or any other, for that matter) or use a third-party software solution: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xp+fax+software
