The most likely reason is that there is an installed printer driver and/or
associated registry entries that are causing the problem. Lexmark may have a
utility that cleans the appropriate registry entries. You may also need to
properly uninstall the printer driver, obtain an updated driver (if
available) and reinstall. Generally, printer driver installation for a USB
printer must be done exactly as per the instructions, and the driver install
is usually needed before you connect the printer to the USB port on the PC.
In extreme cases, it may be necessary to uninstall the system USB controller
and port drivers, reboot, and allow them to reinstall. This process
hopefully breaks any links between a misbehaving printer driver
installation, allowing a reinstall to proceed succcessfully.
The USB uninstall assumes you are using a PS2 interface Keyboard and mouse,
not USB interfaced ones. Ifyou have an OEM version of Win XP, it may be that
the OEM did not include the correct support drivers and files for your
printer. You should also be aware that XP SP-2 has been reported to break
some printer drivers, requiring a driver reinstall or updating.

I have a problem with my USB printer. The USB (none of them) ports willnot
recognize it ( I am using Windows XP Home). The USB ports seem torecognize
anything else I plug into them except the printer. It Is a Lexmark 4200. Iports
know it's not the printer. I tested it on another computer and the USB
found it as soon as I plugged it in.
