I'm sorry. So sorry.
My printer is not attached to an LPT port. It is set up on a network
port. I have a Netgear PS101 print server attached to my HP 722c which
is attached to my Netgear 4 port switch which is attached to my Linksys
4 port router. We have 4 computers hooked up in my house. Everyone has
their own computer. When my computer was the only one using windows
98SE and everyone else was using XP PRO, I was the only one who could
send multiple print jobs to the printer, have them go into the taskbar,
close all the application windows and internet explorer, walk away from
the computer, and then come back to collect the printouts. Not one of
the other 3 computers using XP could accomplish this and now that I am
using XP Pro, I cannot accomplish this anymore. On my network, XP will
only let me print one job at a time. I cannot send it another job or it
will hang (stop printing). If I happen to close the window, the job
will hang.
So does anyone know why XP Pro with service pack 2 does not handle
print jobs the same as 98SE on a network?

The LPT is fine. The enable bidirectional printing is grayed out and
not checked. But it is also the same on my windows 98. Everything is
the same. That's what's puzzling.

Thanks for the reply, but the scanner is not hooked up to the hard
drive with windows XP. My scanner is considered end of life with no
supporting drivers for XP. I only use the scanner after I change
the
cables on the hard drives and use windows 98SE.

I have recently installed Windows XP with service pack 2 on a
bigger
hard drive for my computer. I have my old hard drive with windows
98SE
still inside my computer and capable of going back and forth by
switching cables. A pain, but necessary to use my absolutely
perfect
working scanner that is now considered end of life and no longer
provided with necessary drivers for XP. The only reason I

XP was to double my dsl speed.
I don't know what configurations between the two operating
systems
causes this, but it worked. Now for the downside.
My HP deskjet 722c printer no longer goes into the taskbar when
printing. If I am on the internet and try to print anything, a
little
printer icon goes into one of the five squares at the bottom of
my
internet explorer. If I close the window, the printer hangs. If I
choose to attempt to print something from any other application,
my
printer hangs. Therefore, I can only print one job at a time. I
cannot
attempt to print anything else until the one print job is
finished.
When using Windows 98SE, there was never an issue. The printer
icon
would go into the taskbar on the right hand side next to my
volume
control and date and time properties. I could send the printer at
least
10 print jobs, close every application so the only thing showing
was
the desktop, and walk away from the computer until they were
finished.
As you can tell, the only difference is the OS. All I do is
unplug
the
cable from one hard drive to the other. This doesn't make sense.
Any suggestions as to why the printing capabilities is different
between the two operating systems? I am at a total loss.
