No the work around keeps the firewall enabled, just opens the ports for
incoming network traffic from out side of the current subnet.
Disabling the firewall allows notifications when the client is configured to
display them ( I assume you already configured this as this was working
before SP2).
Which operating system is the print server?

Is this work around the same as turning off the Microsoft firewall? If it
is
I still don't get notifications with the firewall off. Another question
is
which ports are you talking about? Are they the ones in the exception for
file and print sharing: tcp 139, 445 and UDP 137, 138?

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that
a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for
the
specific update in question.
I looked at the bug, here's the workaround from the bug report.
WORKAROUND: Simple- There are two ports needed for Notification
backchannel
and they both have to be 'Closed' or 'OpenRestricted' for the
communication
to fall back to polling. If the customer is willing to change the scope
of
any one of these ports to 'Any computer' then they will get
notifications.

I have some remote printers and would like to have this feature work.
I
have
enabled these button, but I can't get the printer queue icon to pop
up
in
the
system tray or the notification bubbles.
I have xp professional with xpsp2 loaded. My print server version
ntprint.dll and printui.dll are version 5.1.2600.2180.
XPSP SP2 rtm 040803-2158 is the sp2 version.
My other computer worked and it had version 5.1.2600.0 printui.dll.
Did this get broken in SP2?
