Re: Epson Stylus CX7800 Problem

Since the article references Award and Phoenix who are both the same
company, I would say it was a BIOS issue. As you are probably aware, IHVs
order their BIOSes specifically for their own custom built motherboards....
(HP's in general use mutilated Asus boards, never having owned a Dell or a
Sony, I have no idea who builds their boards)....

So one of these companies needs to go back along the 'chain', contacting the
motherboard manufacturers and the motherboard manufacturers need to then
contact the BIOS writers.

It's also a MS problem. Has to do with documentation and SDKs, as well as
interaction between software and hardware. In addition, failure of a non
core driver (Core being a driver needed for basic operation) is not
supposed
to be able to hang windows. However MS does not control how an OEM writes
drivers, other than furnishing system level documentation and such things
as
development kits. If a core driver, such as a USB driver furnished by MS
fails, and hangs the system, that's one thing. If the OEM driver fails,
and
it was properly written in compliance with information furnished by MS,
that's another. If the OEM did something off the wall, that's another.

You cannot say that the OEM or MS is at fault. It may very well be that a
specific chip or chipset does not behave as it should, and the MS
"standard"
driver does not take this into account. IF so, who or what is responsible
to correct the problem-- The chip(set) mfr, the motherboard mfr, or the
driver (device or system) that is behaving in an unusual manner.

What I'm saying in short is that a printer driver should not be able to
"hang" a system such as windows. Corrective action needs to be taken to
prevent the hang..

And do you have one of these PCs that Epson say the problem is limited
to?
I don't see that this is a Microsoft issue, Epson seem to have diagnosed
it
as a Dell and Sony issue.

restart. The CX7800 must be off, then Windows boots up perfectly.

When Epson was contacted, this was their reply.

"This issue has been reported on the Dell Dimension 4500c and the Sony
Vaio
RX series of computers, though it may also occur on some other
computers.
When the BIOS of these computers sends the query during bootup to the
Epson
multi-function device, the query is ignored by the Epson product which
causes the computer to hang during its boot. This problem has been
reported
on some Dell 4500 computer systems using the Phoenix BIOS PLUS v.1.10
A06
ROM chip and on some Sony Vaio RX systems using the Award Medallion
BIOS
v.6.0 ROM chip. The best thing we can suggest to do would be to contact
your computer vendor for a possible update\resolution for this issue.

As a workaround, disconnect the multi-function device from the computer
and
turn it off. Reboot the computer, then reconnect the multi-function
device
to the computer's USB port and power it back on. This will allow for
normal
operation of both your computer and your all-in-one."

Any comments or solutions?
