Outgoing faxes don't go out

Hiya
Have set up fax from PC. All's well until last moment when (just as you
think the fax is going to get ot its destination) a cheerful error message
tells me it isn't going to happen. I've tried several different numbers with
same or similar results. Any suggestions out there?
