System error when trying to print

My Hp 1210xi printer was working perfectly and then suddenly I
received the message: "System Error", unable to print document
because of system error. What type of error is this? I?ve unistalled
the HP software and drivers four times but to no avail. I can use the
sanner portion of the printer through Windows XP, and I can even print
out a page using HP?s Toolbox. So, this tells me at least my cable is
ok. HP Tech support wants me to try "generic" drivers? I can?t
download them because it?s a 166 mb file. (I only have dial-up) It
would take a week to order the CD version. I can?t wait that long.
Also, I would hate to unistall Windows, but if that?s what it would
take, well, then I will.
Would an automatic Windows update cause this problem?
