You may be out of luck. Unfortunately, some of the simple (cheap?) ink jet
printers and the corresponding drivers only work when the driver can
communicate directly with the printer via the USB cable. This means that
getting them to work over a network is impossible or very difficult.

>From the information on the HP web site about this printer, I suspect the HP
DJ 3550 is in this category.

No guarantees, but try this on the ME computer:

Using the technique at http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm,
at step 8, select a different HP DeskJet printer (e.g. HP DeskJet 550C).
This may allow you to print from the ME computer although not all of the
capabilities of the HP DeskJet 3550 will be available.

If this doesn't work, I'll try and think of something else to try. There
are thousands of printer models and I only have one at home and its not an
HP DeskJet 3550, so I can't try this out first.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

response(s) to the original question. Basically my situation is this. Have
an XP box and an HP3550 connected to it (via USB). Can see this printer on
the WinME box, but can't print to it. Either site asks for drivers, but when
I try to install Win 98 drivers, everything screws up. If I try to install
additional drivers for ME on the XP box, it crashes, and if I try to install
the ME drivers on the ME box, it asks me to hook up the printer to the USB
port - but I can't because its connected to the XP box in another room!!!!
